Course Description:

Students will build on the skills and knowledge developed in Art 1. The projects will explore drawing in charcoal, Indian ink, pastels, printmaking, mixed media, oil pastel, hand-built pottery, acrylic and watercolor painting, paper-mache’ and collage. In addition to learning new techniques, students will discover creative responses to the visual challenges that are practiced.

Classroom Materials Required:

Art fee $15.00, writing utensils, eraser, color markers

Elements & Principles of Design

Observe artist examples

Cooperative exercise to explore elements/principles

Create brochure 

Observational Drawing

Practice exercises to build drawing skills

Observe and draw shoe composition using India Ink

Observe and draw the life-sized skeleton using charcoal with Surrealistic elements added in chalk

Ceramics

Using white clay, students will recreate an animal of their choice

Dramatic Self-Portrait

Using the grid technique, enlarge a photo with graphite pencils

Creative Hand Sculpture

Make a hand cast using plaster wrap

Incorporate personal symbols

Acrylic Painting

In the style of Pop Artist Andy Warhol, a current pop icon’s face will be repeated and painted with complementary acrylic colors

Mosaic Masterpiece

Create a paper collage modeled after a famous work of art

Papier-mâché Pun

Create a 3D visual pun using wire, newspaper, paper-mâché, acrylic paint

Protest Collage

Become familiar with protest inspired artwork, use collages to support a viewpoint

Dynamic Printing

Use stencils, sponges, Styrofoam, etc. to create a piece that focuses on symbols and overlapping shapes

Flowering Forms

Discuss/observe work by Wisconsin native, Georgia O’Keeffe

Create convincing flowers or other organic forms with chalk pastels

Frank Lloyd Wright Tissue Design

Observe work from the famous Architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.  Use his style to create your own design w/ tissue paper. 

Student Evaluation:

Quarter grades: Projects 90%, Daily Participation 5%, Introductory Exercises 5%

Come to class on time and be prepared to learn and participate

Complete all assignments to the best of your ability

Treat everyone with dignity and respect

Ask for help or clarification when needed

Tardy Policy:

Students tardy to class (unexcused) are missing valuable instruction time; therefore, every five tardies will result in the deduction of one participation point.

Absent Policy:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out the missed information.  The number of days from class is the amount of time you have to complete the material missed with full credit.

Late Work:

Late work is accepted with 10 points off.  More will be deducted the later it is turned in to the instructor.
