Course Description:

Students will explore a wide variety of painting techniques, tools, and materials. The project experiences will include the following: Watercolor, Acrylic Paint, and Art history as it applies to each project.

Classroom Materials Required:

Art fee $10.00, pencil, and eraser 

Student Evaluation:

Quarter grades:  Projects 60%, Daily Participation 20%, introductory exercises 20%

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

Come to class on time and be prepared to learn and participate

Clean up your work area daily

Complete all assignments to the best of your ability

Treat everyone with dignity and respect

Ask for help or clarification when needed

Tardy Policy:

Being tardy on a regular basis loses valuable learning time, every 5 tardies will result in one less participation point

Absent Policy:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to research/request the missed information.  The number of days from class is the amount of time you have to complete the material missed with full credit

Late Work:

Late work is accepted with 10 points off.  Additional points will be deducted, the later it is turned in to the instructor.

Extra Credit:

Extra credit points will be added to cooperation/participation grade, but only if all previous projects have been completed

Projects to be completed:

I.           Watercolor

A. Watercolor Exploration- experience color mixing and various watercolor techniques with culminating tree project

B. Watercolor/India Ink – painting will be based on still-life sketches with ink as a component

C. Color Spectrum -  choose a silhouetted subject and create a background using the entire color spectrum in the order of the color wheel 

II. Acrylic Painting

      A.  Animated Character – Recreate a favorite cartoon character

      B.  Piet Mondrian’s Abstraction - After observing Mondrian’s work, students will create a piece in his style with attention to flat even color

      C.  Symbolic Layers - using symbolic images create a painting with a theme of the student’s choice

     D.   Reinventing a Masterpiece– after sketching several well-known paintings, combine three images or styles into a new piece that is 6x6”

E.  Color Wheel– Repeat a theme 12 times to create an inventive color wheel
